An Adventure with Erika!

Erika and I had a wonderful day! It started with baptisms at the BEAUTIFUL Newport Beach Temple!

We then headed to Balboa for some fun in the sun... well overcast clouds! HAHA, we had a blast to say the least!
Us and our floppy hats :P

Then we went to the FUN ZONE!

The ferris wheel when we walked in was going so fast and we thought.. hmm probably not the best idea to go on that! We decided to go anyway and it was so fun, but so scary at first!

view from the mid-top
having lots of fun!!

walking back to the car... parallel parking half a mile away!

Then, I found this ADORABLE place to eat lunch/dinner.  It's called true food in Newport beach. It was DELICIOUS.  ANDDDDDD.... IT WAS GLUTEN FREE! Erika had a zillion choices! It was so amazing!

the turkey lasagna, that was AMAZING

ok HOW cute is this?!

And my favorite thing of the day, SALT WATER TAFFY!!

Little Corona Del Mar

Yesterday, Paige and I ventured to the beach! We ended up down in this cute little cove,  called little corona del mar!  It was surprisingly wonderful! The water was really clear and there were no rip tides, only down side, IT WAS FREEZING.. I mean SO COLD. At one point we were the only two swimmers in the water and my hands were numb! It was fun nonetheless!
Little Corona Del Mar

Paigey and the water bottle repping our future!

I rocked that Kate bun!

trying to find coldstone.. it took longer than expected..

and to my dismay, I got burned....

The Power of Prayer

Alright, so today I attended my very first institute class and it was A-MAY-ZING! Brother Andre taught and it was honestly phenomenal! I can't even describe how good it felt to be there! It was also an beautifully spiritual day! I started the Book of Mormon again, I want to read it once more before heading off to college, and I got a lot more than I had expected out of 1 Nephi 1! Then I went on to babysit and give rides, but thats normal... And then institute!

Today's lesson was on Chastity and the general conference talk by David A. Bednar was what we based the whole lesson off of.  It was amazing. We opened with hymn 131-More Holiness Give Thee, and then watched the video on sexual purity with the 6 people who all have the same beliefs but are of different faiths... if you haven't seen it you can find it here.  Then we jumped right into it. Didn't waste any time! I wish I could just scan in my paper and show you all my notes.. there is just too much to tell! I guess I will start with the question, Why is the law of chastity SO important? Its interesting to me that Elder Bednar asks WHY not WHAT.  It is important because it is a part of the plan... I guess everything under the plan of happiness (which if you think about it is actually EVERYTHING) is really important.. whoa inception.. The first paragraph of this talk is all about how we are children of God and we each have a divine nature and destiny-- which screams LOVE... HEAVENLY FATHER LOVES US SO MUCH he gave us the PLAN OF HAPPINESS! I just LOVE that! Alright... it would literally take me forever to explain the next two hours and all my notes to you so I am going to highlight was I thought was most important and what I got out of institute today!

  • Eloh-(IM) is PLURAL-in Hebrew, anything that ends in IM means plural.. when it is used in the scriptures it refers to 'Gods' meaning Heavenly Father and MOTHER! It's plural in the scriptures because it is referring to them as a couple!
  • everything falls under the plan of happiness
  • we as a church are PRO-EXALTATION, not anti-ANYTHING... yes we even talked about the gay marriage issue! We don't hate anyone, we are just pro-life, pro-families, PRO-EXALTATION!
  • The power of procreation is SO important and sacred that if we misuse it we are ruining the plan of happiness for ourselves!
  • We didn't come to Earth to raise children, we came to Earth to become great parents and to become a couple with someone.
  • To raise Christ-centered children, WE have to be Christ-centered!
  • Our bodies give us the power to CREATE ALL THINGS.. whether it be photography or children, WE HAVE THE POWER!
  • temp- it means TEMPORARY, so Temple- home away from home, temptation- temporary trial
  • For every piece of truth in the gospel, Satan finds a way to flip it just to hurt Heavenly Father.
  • The church only has one stand- I believe it says "single, UNDEVIATING standard of sexual morality" only between a man and woman in the marriage relationship prescribed in God's plan!
  • The real test: "Will I respond to the inclinations of the natural man, or will I yield to the enticings of the Holy Spirit and put off the natural man and become a saint through the Atonement of Christ the Lord?
  • The Atonement LITERALLY covers EVERYTHING..
  • Satan's eternal progress has been HALTED
  • Chastity has EVERYTHING to do with honoring our Savior!
  • Marriage is a process- NOT an event!
  • Guilt makes us turn to The Lord
  • alright, I can't even begin to describe how this next paragraph impacted me so here is the whole thing..
    • Some of you who receive this message need to repent of sexual or other sins. The Savior is often referred to as the Great Physician, and this title has both symbolic and literal significance. All of us have experienced the pain associated with a physical injury or wound. When we are in pain, we typically seek relief and are grateful for the medication and treatments that help to alleviate our suffering. Consider sin as a spiritual wound that causes guilt or, as described by Alma to his son Corianton, “remorse of conscience” (Alma 42:18). Guilt is to our spirit what pain is to our body—a warning of danger and a protection from additional damage. From the Atonement of the Savior flows the soothing salve that can heal our spiritual wounds and remove guilt. However, this salve can only be applied through the principles of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, and consistent obedience. The results of sincere repentance are peace of conscience, comfort, and spiritual healing and renewal.
    • Its a bad thing if we are feeling guilt, BUT it protects us from what more could happen if we wee to continue down the bad path.
  • LOVE INCREASES THROUGH RIGHTEOUS RESTRAINT AND DECREASES THROUGH IMPULSIVE INDULGENCE. This is the most powerful sentence in the entire talk to me... just read it over a couple of times and let it sink in. Then read this: Psalms 46:10. Really, really powerful.
  • And now think of a room full of single adults-- all ready and prepared to preach the gospel to those inquiring. HOPE OF ISRAEL, RISE IN MIGHT! WITH THE SWORD OF TRUTH AND RIGHT! SOUND THE WAR CRY, WATCH AND PRAY. VANQUISH EVERY FOE TODAY! WOW. and that is how we ended. Such an amazing lesson!

SO now getting down to why this post is entitled POWER OF PRAYER.

I have had many things on my mind lately; should I go to efy? What about these other activities? What do I do about this and so and so?

As I was sitting in class, I got an answer to my first question that I had prayed about. I don't need to go to EFY this year.. All I need to do is attend institute to get that same feeling and learn those amazing things! I was sitting there like "OH MY GOSH! WHY HAVEN'T I COME EARLIER? By the way, Thanks Heavenly Father! You're awesome!"  And then I got a text from my mom saying she got her limited-use temple recommend! WE CAN FINALLY GO DO BAPTISMS! AND THEN, as if things couldn't get ANY BETTER, I checked my phone and had two missed calls and voice mails from the patriarch who I had wanted to get my blessing from, telling me how sorry he was about not getting back to me so fast and he was out of town.  He went on to tell me he had scheduled me for THIS FRIDAY, 5 days earlier than my already scheduled appointment! I didn't know what to think and so as I drove Jenni home I pondered as I listened to hymns.  After I dropped her off and had quiet time to myself, I was silently assured that I needed to get my blessing earlier, rather than later.  It was such an amazing moment. Now I just have to clear everything up with the other Patriarch and I WILL HAVE IT IN 2 DAYS! I am BEYOND STOKED!!

Peaches - and LOTS of them!

Today was a very good day! I slept in which was glorious, (it seems to me that I have been going to bed so late all the time now) and then I went and picked peaches from sister Hoppie's gorgeous peach tree!! There were a TON of peaches!! We also talked for about an hour after picking fruit! I just love talking to her! On my way home, I cruised, because well WHY NOT? I shouldn't have to explain this, but I will... haha its 80 blissful degrees outside, I just got new music and I love my sunglasses! SO I cruised around blasting some music... typical teenager stuff right?

peach tree
I mean look at this tree! It is flipping gorgeous! AND those peaches! TO DIE FOR. MELT IN YOUR MOUTH GOOD! I only grabbed about 35 of them.... only... and headed home to make some jam and whatever else I could think of with peaches.

then cut them, removed the cores..

I decided to go with making jam, since that was my first intention.
I washed all the peaches
then I chopped them up and got out the other
ingredients.. sugar and water

I poured everything into the pot.. medium heat until boiling
stirred it

After it came to a boil I let it cool for about 5 minutes and then I threw it in my blendtech (which I LOVE) and pulsed it to get a smaller chunky mixture. Because there is no PECTIN, It's not going to set like a jam, but it is still delicious! I packaged a lot of it up and put it in the fridge.. waiting to try it tomorrow for breakfast!

*update 16 July 2013:
I had the jam on toast for breakfast and it was so good! On my first slice I put it all over, and by the time I got to the end of the piece, it was SOGGY! :( SO what I recommend is that you put the jam on per bite you take, so the bread doesn't get soggy!

HERE is the JAM recipe!

  1. 2 large peaches, washed and pitted
  2. 1 c water
  3. 3/4 c granulated sugar
  1. Chop peaches, leaving the skin on.
  2. Place in a medium saucepan.
  3. Add water and sugar.
  4. Cook partly covered on medium heat until it boils.
  5. Reduce heat to low, uncovered, until reduced by half and syrupy ( it can take up to 30 minutes ).
  6. Take off heat and let cool slightly in saucepan.
  7. Carefully place in food processor and process until smooth ( 10 - 15 seconds ).
  8. Pour into a jar and let sit on the counter until cools completely.
  9. Place the lid on top and store in fridge.

I ALSO MADE PEACH OATMEAL BREAD! I have no pictures because .. well simply put, it came out of the oven and before it could really cool, it was GONE! It is THAT GOOD! Here is the recipe I used.. I am pretty sure this person just adapted a Banana Nut bread to fit with peaches, had the same taste! Enjoy:)

Peach Oatmeal Bread

2 cups (12 ounces) peeled, sliced peaches; thawed if using frozen slices, well drained if using canned
2 cups (8 ounces) whole wheat flour, traditional or whole white wheat
¾ cup (3 and 1/8 ounces) unbleached bread flour
½ cup (3 and ½ ounces) granulated sugar
½ cup (3 and ¾ ounces) packed light or brown sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup (3 and ½ ounces) old fashioned rolled oats
2 large eggs
1 cup (8 ounces) milk
¼ cup vegetable oil
¼ teaspoon almond extract
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. Cut the peaches into small ¼ pinch pieces; place in a strainer to drain. Stir together the flours, sugars, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices in a large mixing bowl. Add the oats and peaches; stir to coat the peaches. Beat together the eggs, milk, oil, and almond extract in a small mixing bowl. Add to the flour mixture, stirring until just evenly moistened.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for one hour. Test the loaf for doneness; if a toothpick inserted in the center doesn’t come out clean, cover the top of the bread with foil and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool in the pan for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, run a table knife around the edges of the loaf to make sure it’s not sticking, then turn it out of the pan and return it to the rack to cool completely before slicing.
Yields one 9 x 5-inch loaf, 16 servings.

And for the joke of my day:

My dad walked into the kitchen and asked me if Daniel had swpet the pool yet.
I told him, no, and I have been in the kitchen all day.. (the kitchen looks out on the pool)
He replied to me "That's where you mormon women belong!"

IT WAS SO FUNNY... He was obviously joking and the best part is that he does most of the cooking.  Typical Mitchy-boy!

Sunday Funday

Today, I knew was going to be busy! I has a presidency meeting, BYC, and a combined third hour with the young men... plus two farewell talks (in the same sacrament meeting.. thank goodness) before all of the above!

I knew this. So why on earth would I only have a smoothie for breakfast and wear six inch heals to church? Obviously I have no idea because that is what I did! come 1 I as so hungry, but still had 4 hours to go... and right around 2 when my actual church block was starting my feet were killing me... Lessons learned: wear flats on long days, BRING A SNACK if I'm not going home! sheesh! I got home around 5:30 and at about 6 stuffed my face with whatever I could find!

Overall it was a great day! I heard two farewell talks from two young men in my seminary class who leave THIS Wednesday! YES THIS WEDNESDAY! It is crazy to think that a MONTH ago we were in seminary and now one is going to the Phillipinies and the other, Idaho! Soon, the rest of the seminary boys will leave too! It is so insane! I look at my life now and think, could I really drop everything right now and go preach the gospel for 18 months? I am ready to go through the temple? I am willing to put off college? So many questions arise with a mission and I know those boys are way more prepared than I am right now! Good for them! I am so proud of the choice they have made to go on missions! I wish them the best of luck!

The presidency meeting which consisted of me and Sister Christensen was quick, and  BYC was straight to the point (which was so nice) and out early! (uheardof!) Then sacrament we had a lovely line up of speakers which happened to include my brother, Daniel... Second hour with sister Harder was also great. We talked about the sacrament and why it is important.  3rd hour was combined with the young men and we finished our discussion on the Ward Mission Plan and how the youth is a part of that!

Finally I was able to come home and rest my sore feet and take a breather! I love going to church and I love the gospel! It is such a blessing in my life! I am so grateful for it all!

A Week in Review: Monday July 8-Saturday July 13

So I got this really cool app, called COLLECT... (if you don't have it, GET IT!) It is a picture calender app when you upload your picture and then you can write something about it and it saves on the little calender. For me it is a daily reminder to take pictures and journal about what is going on! It also helps me when it comes to blogging because I already know what to write! It is such a clever app! Ijust love it!

ANYWAY: This week in review:

AH, JULY, almost up to date!!!

Soemtimes I get in blogging binges! These past couple of days have most definitely been one of those times!  BUT, as I head off to college soon, I want to start updating more often! Here's to the new me, also by a new name- well not really, just my full name- Madeline! It sounds more sophisticated! As a college girl I want to be sophisticated so I am starting to introduce myself as Madeline.  It has been a weird adjustment though, I must say so myself! I am so used to Maddy that when I say "my name is Madeline" I totally butcher it and pretty much say: my name is Madddeeeeelinefjkbdslkfgaiwfkaf.." and then the person responds, "sorry I didn't get that" or "sorry what?" and so I am working on my pronunciation! Its so funny! Its going to be a fun journey!

WELL ANYWAY, if you don't want to read me rambling ^^ here is what July has consisted of:
